Meet Storm Large

Our first nominee for most fascinating person in the world--who speaks English--is Portland rock star Storm Large

Sure, Storm is fierce—an Amazon warrior who makes slaves of her audiences by dint of a talent so ferocious that fans Googling her name after she appeared on national television crashed weather.com. And, yes, she’s outrageous—the kind of thoughtful dinner guest who pulls off her shirt to show you her boob job. And, of course, she’s beautiful—so arresting you can’t stop staring at her, even more so when she’s not wearing make-up.

But what fascinates us most about the aptly monikered Storm Large (her real name, by the way) is her completely original mind. No matter the topic of conversation, you can guarantee that Storm will reinterpret it with a rock ‘n roll perspective that’s equal parts sex, violence and the edge of insanity.

“Everyone has a mouth cop,” she says, “but I think mine was killed in the line of duty.”

We chose Storm to inaugurate the Mesmer Project because this rock star orbited in and out of Marc’s Do Something New Project as his muse, an inspiration in the audaciously unapologetic way she lives with the volume turned up to eleven.

Welcome, Storm.

1. What motivates you to get up in the morning?
To get up and be awesome .... strong coffee and good ideas are also motivating.

2. What keeps you awake at night? What obsesses you?
I didn't do enough. I didn't do it well enough. I hurt someone's feelings. I let somebody down. I'm running out of time.

3. What do you struggle with most?
Laziness and worrying about others.

4. What is the most valuable lesson you've learned?
I'm a lot stronger than I give myself credit for.

5. What is your personal philosophy or motto?
"I fucking rule , thank you very much."

Storm Large is an entertainer of Wikipedian proportions. Before her turn on the stage as Sally Bowles in Portland Center Stage's "Cabaret," she strutted through America's living rooms on CBS's "Rockstar:Supernova." Previous to her television debut, Storm was already a Portland icon of song and horribly inappropriate stage banter. With her band, The Balls, she has rocked, rolled and ruffled feathers all around this great country, all across Canada, Iceland, New Zealand, The Philippines and Singapore. She is currently working on her one woman show, "Crazy Enough," slated to open March 31st in PCS's Studio theater.

Ah, the perfect first subject! How do you follow Storm?

This is a disappointing choice. You have written about this woman endlessly and it is old. She is not as interesting as you make her out to be. Outrageous and semi-talented does not make someone interesting. What is she actually doing for the world??? Hopefully you will find people outside your clique of friends to write about or this will get old, very, very fast.

Ouch, Anonymous. What Storm does for the world is inspire thousands of people to be their most outrageous, audacious selves. No small achievement.

Regardless, service to the world does not make necessarily make someone interesting. Admirable? Yes. But our definition of fascinating is someone you could listen to all night, someone who is up to something exciting every time you see them. Storm is definitely one of those people. Ask anyone who's met her.

As for choosing from my clique of friends, the point of the project is to begin with five fascinating people Floyd and I actually know, then have those people nominate people they actually know and so on. The personal connection is essential.

Oops. The sentence above should have read, "Regardless, service to the world does not necessarily make someone fascinating."

There are plenty of interesting people in the world, and even more who do interesting things. Anyone who likes to travel instantly falls into that category.

But what sets the fascinating apart is their ability to regale us with tales of their adventures that leave us spellbound and panting for more.

Think Scheherazade, whose life was spared by her gift of telling stories that captivated the king.

Congratulations on completing your 2008 challenge, and best of luck on this new initiative. I'm confident that it will be both interesting and fascinating, even if readers don't always agree with your choices! Storm seems like a good starting place to me.

Mesmerizing is a perfect way to describe Storm and an fitting introduction to this project.

This is a very creative idea, coming from two very creative minds, it is no surprise.

Good luck with this project, I am very excited to see who is next.

Storm is a lot more fascinating than some internet dweeb who's too much of a punk to sign their name. Way to give to the world, anon.

Marc, I'm totally bummed I missed your play! Time got away from me. If another theatre picks it up, I will definitely catch it next time. Very interesting new project, I'll enjoy following along.

I've got to be honest, I'm with Kronda on this one.

(Incidentally, wouldn't that make a great campaign slogan for someone named Kronda?)

The Anonymous maladroit who so liberally applied his or her vitriolic (and apparently much-revered) condescension to this freshly christened endeavor had really better take a few moments with a therapist.

It's not all about you, sugar.
And yes, that was condescending.

Moving on to more positive things, being a part of Marc and Floyd's ostensibly menacing "clique" does allow me access to this beautiful and captivating woman.
She's inspirational in a way that I could only ever hope to one day be.
Not to mention she's sexy as Hell with the thermostat on high.

Bravo boys.
An excellent choice.

Great start to the project! Ms. Large is quite mesmerizing and the project itself has really captured my imagination. It's lead me to ponder the amazing people in my life. Can't wait to see who else shows up on your list!

Thanks for drumming in 2009 with us!

Storm Large is a great way to christen this boat of celebrating talent, wherever it is found. I've always promoted the sass that tantalizes inspiration.

I've delighted to learn about (and see virtual performances) of Storm through your blog. I also love the personal connection you designed for this project. It's a vibrant way to use this blogging venue to really make it matter. No one can say your blog falls into the category of most blogs that are "never have so many said so much to so few". Your personal projects have that connection between writer and audience.

I'm thrilled to meet all the fascinating people you will present because none of us truly ever wants to be anonymous.
